GISD Board of Trustees vote for reduction in force to deal with state budget cuts
Move made to deal with a $4.7 million state mandated budget cut for next school year; 50 contractual positions to be affected throughout various schools and programs
GALVESTON, TX - Galveston ISD Board of Trustees voted 6-0, with Beau Rawlins in absentia, to declare a program change and/or reorganization to deal with $4.7 million in state mandated budget cuts for the 2012-2013 school year. Fifty contractual positions will be affected throughout the district with the moves saving the district approximately $2 million. The reduction in force will take place after the current school year.
"Losing positions, especially teachers, is a difficult process to go through and every school, program and department has been evaluated extensively to come up with a fair system," said Superintendent of Schools Larry Nichols. "Unfortunately, the cuts we've made already aren't enough to deal with the deficit we face from the state legislature. You will most likely see more cuts before it gets better."
The reduction in force is another in a series of measures to deal with a total of $7.4 million in cuts over two years. Some earlier measures included a reduction of staff at the administrative level as well as maintenance and operations, a change to a state-managed health insurance, and consolidation of programs. An early exit incentive program results in a savings of over $2 million with 39 employees accepting the offer.
Schools and programs facing cuts include:
Middle school teachers at Weis (College Prep), Central or ECHS - up to 20 positions
DAEP - up to 6 positions
AIM Middle School - up to 2 positions
AIM High School - up to 3 positions
CTE/Vocational Programs at Ball High School - up to 6 positions
Counseling program - up to 2 positions
Library program - up to 2 positions
Nursing program - up to 2 positions
Social Workers/Intervention Specialists - up to 5 positions
Newcomer program - up to 1 position
