Galveston ISD Trustees appoint Mary Cazares to District 3-C seat at special meeting
Local banker takes the seat of former Trustee and now city councilperson Norman Pappous; district seat up for election in November
GALVESTON, Texas - Galveston ISD Board of Trustees appointed Mary Cazares as its newest member at the Wednesday, July 11 special meeting. The board voted 5-1, David O'Neal against, for Cazares to take the seat left vacant by Norman Pappous when he was elected to city council by Galveston voters. Cazares will be sworn-in at the following board meeting on July 25.
"I'm very excited and I look forward to being a part of the group," said Cazares. "I believe I can bring some value to the organization. I think working in the banking industry, I fully understand profit and losses, and that what we need to work within the budget."
Cazares graduated from Ball High in 1984 and also attended Galveston College. She has over 25 years of experience working in the local banking industry, first at Guaranty Bank, then for BBVA Compass Bank. She works BBVA Compass as the Senior Preferred Relationship Manager.
The appointment follows a process in which applications were taken by the district from all interested in the seat vacancy. The Board selected Cazares from the group of applicants to fill the seat that will be up for election in November. Councilman Pappous formally recommended Cazares for the district seat following his departure in a letter addressed to the board.
