GISD Back to School Fair set for August 16, seeking vendors

The GISD Back to School Fair is set to kick-off on Friday, August 16 and will be a one-stop shop for parents wanting to get their children ready for the first day of school. The event will take place at the San Luis Convention Center (5600 Seawall Boulevard). The event will go from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Each year, thousands of Galvestonians visit the Convention Center to prepare for the upcoming school year. The fair serves as a central place for students, parents, and community members to get everything done for the first day of school, including Pre-Kindergarten registration, gathering school supply lists and dress codes, signing up for before- and after-school activities through the 21st Century Community Learning Centers, obtaining bus routes and applying for child nutrition plans.

Parents who qualify can also sign up students for the free and reduced lunch program, free uniforms and school supplies. Entertainment will be provided by school spirit groups and community performers.

"It's important because early preparation is key," said Kelley Romar, director of GISD's Discovery Club/Homeless Program. "This is an opportunity for kids to get prepared for the new school year in one place, on one day. Everything offered will insure their success in school, which is why we are bringing in our community partners to showcase their programs."

The event also features over 70 vendors from across Galveston and beyond, including UTMB with free vaccinations, information on bilingual services, the parent liaison/mentoring program, new state assessments, special education information, college and career readiness programs, and bullying prevention.

Other groups who have signed up include children's insurance companies, UTMB pediatrics, the Family Service Center, and the Galveston Chamber of Commerce Education Committee. The Houston Region Attorney General's Office will be on hand to discuss child support services, Shriners Hospitals for Children, the Boys and Girls Club, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America, Poison Control, D'Feet Breast Cancer, and credit unions and banking institutions to set up children's savings accounts.

Donations are currently being accepted for the Back to School Fair. Door prize drawings will be held and organizers are in need of school supplies and school uniforms. To sign up your business to attend or to make any donations, please call Kelley Romar at 409-939-7418 or email her at kelley_romar@gisd.org .

Vendors may fill out a registration form at www.gisd.org/backtoschoolfair . Groups that wish to perform on the day of the event, should contact communications@gisd.org.

"This is one of our best events each year," said Superintendent of Schools Larry Nichols. "It shows the tremendous support we have from our community in helping to educate our children, our most valuable asset. We can't thank the volunteers and participants enough."

Johnston Farrow is the communications specialist for Galveston ISD.
