Superintendent of Schools
The Galveston Independent School District Board of Trustees unanimously voted to name Larry W. Nichols, former Calhoun County Superintendent of Schools, as the lone finalist for the open position of superintendent on July 21, 2010. He signed his contract on August 11 of that year and began his time in office on September 1.
Mr. Nichols replaced Lynne Cleveland who left GISD in June 2010 after she acceted a job with Little Elm ISD in north Texas. Mr. Nichols joined Calhoun County ISD in 2000 as the Superintendent of Schools. The Texas Education Agency rated the district "Academically Exemplary" for the 2009-2010 school year and "Academically Recognized" in 2008 and 2009. He served in the same capacity at Caldwell Independent School District from 1992-2000 and Thorndale ISD from 1989-1992.
His educational philosophy is founded on positive, enthusiastic relationships built on respect between students and educators while maintaining safety in schools. He also believes principals need both authority and responsibility to lead campuses. He has been married to Dana Nichols since 1978 and has two daughters, Caitlin and Christie.
"I am honored to be selected and partnered with the team assembled at Galveston ISD,” said Mr. Nichols. "I have a couple of things that are my driving force: customer service and educating one student at a time. I realize I have a lot to learn but I’m looking forward to meeting and getting to know everyone in the community.”
His previous district, Calhoun County ISD is based in Port Lavaca, a coastal area serving 4,300 students. It is a 4A classified school district.
