Mr. Michael Merritte

Professional Communication and Debate Teacher

I am a BOI, and a proud BHS Class of 1972 graduate. A true "Welcome Back Kotter" if you remember the late 70's ABC Sitcom in which a teacher returns to his HS Alma Mater to teach. Just like the sitcom, I am a 43 year veteran classroom Professional - Communication / Speech teacher, and Forensics (competitive Speech coach). Like Mr. Kotter all my years as an educator have been here on Galveston Island with GISD. I have had the pleasure of teaching students who are now my colleagues, attorneys, successful business persons, speech therapists, college professors-Forensics coaches ,accountants, peace officers, career military service persons, presidential candidates, and clergy. The professional, and civic accomplishments of former students is a testament to the positive life changing impact my high school speech teacher and coach Susan Burris had on me. I realize that I am standing on the shoulders of giants (like Burris) who have labored and dedicated a career body of work educating the multi- cultural, ethnically diverse children of my hometown. The same genuine empathy, passion, motivation and knowledge of the present, coupled with a vision of a future full of possibilities is the mission statement embedded in me from my former teachers. This is the driving force that I attempt to inspire in my students. MY Teaching Philosophy,"There is GOOD...BETTER...&... BEST... NEVER let it rest, until your GOOD is BETTER & your BETTER is BEST!!!
I am married to another BOI Priscilla (the boss). I enjoy reading, public speaking, cooking, history, current events, sports, spending time with BHS classmates, and travelling.
