Galveston ISD provides academically challenging learning experiences for K-12 Gifted and Talented (G/T) students. We provide in-school opportunities, and when possible, out-of-school opportunities relevant to the student’s area of strength throughout the school year.
Special Activities in Gifted Education (S.A.G.E.) is the Gifted and Talented program in Galveston ISD. Our program serves students in Kindergarten through Fourth Grade. Students in First through Fourth Grade receive instruction through a self-contained, cluster, or pull-out program. Identified gifted and talented students receive rigorous academic instruction with a strong focus on pacing, depth, and complexity. Instruction will engage students in examining multiple viewpoints, understanding the connectedness of all things, predicting the impact/value of events and choices, and utilizing knowledge to creatively improve or eliminate situations for the good of society. Differentiation of instruction for identified students is a regular part of their instructional services as well.
At the middle school level, students are clustered and/or offered enrollment in Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) courses, designed specifically for English/language arts, math, science, and social studies.
At the high school level, students receive a variety of advanced placement opportunities through enrollment in Advanced Placement (AP) or Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) courses.
Galveston ISD is committed to providing developmentally appropriate activities for the gifted and talented. The district values the unique human potential possessed by these students. Our ultimate vision is to nurture and maximize the intellectual, social, emotional, and creative potential of each student. Careful attention to the affective needs, balanced with highly challenging and innovative instruction, will enhance the opportunity for long-range success.
In order to address the specific needs of gifted students, Galveston ISD offers flexible services that accommodate their special needs, abilities, and interests. Curriculum and instruction meet the needs of gifted students by modifying the depth, complexity, and pacing of the general school services. Modified elements include content, process, product, and learning environment.
S.A.G.E. students will have the opportunity to:
· Work together as a group
· Work with other gifted students
· Work independently
Identified students in Kindergarten through Fourth Grade work on such activities as: Tangrams, Analogies, Logic Puzzles, Mind Benders, Deductive Reasoning Stories, and Plexers to enhance their problem solving and divergent/convergent thinking skills. For creativity, our students will develop an understanding of creativity skills involving spatial reasoning, attribute listing, fluency, originality, and elaboration. Gifted and talented students will have a continuum of in depth learning experiences, including independent research that will lead to the development of advanced level products and/or performances.
