Mr. Gerald May

AP English III

Hello! My name is Mr. May, and I’m thrilled to say that I have taught High School English since 2013. In addition, I have taught philosophy and Ethics as an adjunct professor for San Jacinto College since 2000. I have also taught philosophy at Galveston College. I graduated from Norwich University with a B.A. in Psychology in 1990, and shortly thereafter began working as a Community Supervision and Corrections Officer for the Texas state courts. During my 10 year tenure there, I attended the University of St. Thomas, Houston and graduated with an MLA in Sociology and Philosophy in 1995. The approach to education, which I utilize as an educator is modeled on Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle who in their quest for learning inspires the student in the passionate pursuit of truth, beauty, and goodness through reading, writing, and critical thinking. My goal then as an educator is to move beyond constructing the students as subjects who will passively learn from me to realizing students as active and participatory learners with their own intentionality and knowledge base. Finally, reading, writing and critical thinking is best understood when it can be directly related to real world experience. Thus I challenge and encourage students to engage in current events and their own experience through the lenses of the concepts, theories and issues read, discussed, and written about in class. This not only makes knowledge more relevant but also facilitates learning and writing outside the classroom. My goal is to help students realize their potential for a love of learning through literature and non-fiction and to inspire them to do noble and great things through their own efforts in attaining their world class education at Ball High School. I have lived in Galveston County since 1995, and enjoy grilling BBQ, reading, watching movies, and spending time with my wife and family, and my dog, Sophie.
