• What is a Magnet School?

Magnet schools are visionary, innovative, and open to all students regardless of zip code. These public schools offer specialized courses or curriculum designed to attract students from across normal boundaries and connect them with their interests to make learning more meaningful. While Magnet schools are still accountable to state standards, it is the "soft skills" that make these schools stand out. These skills - teamwork, acceptance, innovation, and engagement - are necessary to help children be better prepared for future careers and positive, successful community engagement. Not only do students in magnet schools interact with peers from all backgrounds, but they are also engaged in hands-on experiences with businesses, cultural institutions, universities, and community organizations.

Galveston Independent School District has several APEX (Academic Programs for Equity and eXcellence) campuses which are Magnet Schools. Some of these are currently funded by the Magnet Schools Assistance Program (Burnet, Crenshaw, Morgan, Oppe).
