Campus Consolidation Information
The GISD Board of Trustees voted to consolidate Rosenberg and Morgan Elementary Schools, as well as Austin and Weis Middle Schools.
The goal of this consolidation is to best serve students by improving operational efficiency and enhancing educational opportunities in the 2024-25 school year.
In the 2024-2025 School Year:
- Rosenberg Elementary and Morgan Elementary will be combined into one elementary campus in the current Austin Middle School Building, located at 1514 Ursuline St. Galveston, Texas, 77550.
- Students entering sixth grade at the start of the 2024-2025 school year will attend the district's current fifth-grade campus, Weis Middle School. The campus will house all fifth and sixth-grade students from the consolidation forward.
- GISD will continue to offer its Schools of Choice program among the district's five elementary campuses, which will comprise the new elementary school at Austin, Oppe, Parker, Burnet, and Crenshaw.
Campus Leadership
Dear GISD Community:
We want to inform you that Dr. Julia Ramirez and Michelle Hammonds have been selected to lead GISD’s future consolidated campuses - Austin Elementary and Weis Middle School, respectively - as announced by Dr. Neighbors during the January regular board meeting.
“I am truly honored to be chosen as the principal for the new Austin Elementary School,” Dr. Ramirez said. “I am really looking forward to working with the staff and students from Morgan and Rosenberg to create the new design of the new campus. Just think of how exciting it will be to come together with our ideas to build an amazing experience for our students and families! It is an exciting time in GISD, and I am thrilled to be part of this new team!”
Michelle Hammonds, current Weis Middle School principal, will continue to lead Weis as it shifts from being a fifth-grade only campus to serving both fifth and sixth-grade students with the start of the 2024-2025 school year.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to continue to serve the GISD community at Weis and continue to build upon our mission to create Caring Community Members, Courageous Learners, and Confident Leaders,” Hammonds said. “Creating a culture where staff feel valued and supported and where students feel safe, loved, and challenged to be their best will continue to be a driving force for our campus.”
Assistant principals and counselors for Austin and Weis will also be announced soon. Teacher placements will be announced by spring break.
