Library Book Review Process

In alignment with Senate Bill 13, which requires school districts to ensure that library materials are appropriate and free from harmful content, Galveston ISD has established a standardized process for reviewing any book currently in circulation within a GISD school library. This process is designed to help identify materials that may be inappropriate for the age and grade level of the students who have access to them.

To request a review, individuals must first confirm that the book is part of a campus’s active library catalog. The requester must then obtain and read the entire book, as the district cannot supply copies and will not move forward with a review unless the book has been fully read. Specific passages and page numbers believed to contain inappropriate content must be identified and submitted using the designated review form.

Once the form is completed, the district librarian verifies the information and prepares a report. District administration then reviews the findings and determines whether the material should be removed from the campus, removed from all GISD libraries, or retained with no action taken.

This process supports the intent of Senate Bill 13 by ensuring that all library materials available to students are age-appropriate, academically relevant, and free from content deemed harmful under state guidelines.
