GALVESTON, Texas – May 25, 2023 – Dr. Matthew Neighbors has been named the Lone Finalist for Galveston ISD’s Superintendent of Schools position – a decision made by the district’s Board of Trustees during a special board meeting held May 24.

Dr. Neighbors, a 19-year GISD veteran, has served in numerous leadership positions within the district, including assistant principal at Ball High School, principal at Austin Middle School, director of Ball High’s media arts and digital technology program, executive director of secondary education, interim assistant superintendent of business and operations and most recently, acting CEO.

“It is humbling, and an honor, to be considered for the next superintendent of GISD,” Dr. Neighbors said. “I owe so much to the people and experiences I have had in the district. Please reach out with both ideas and concerns as we prepare for the next school year.”

GISD’s Board of Trustees will vote to finalize the decision during the district’s June 21 regular board meeting with an effective date of July 1.
