GALVESTON, Texas - April 30, 2021 - At the April 28 Board of Trustees Meeting, Galveston ISD named Matthew Neighbors as the district’s executive director of secondary education. Neighbors, currently the principal at Austin Middle School, will oversee campuses and leadership at the middle school and high school levels. The role will include planning, implementing, and evaluating instructional programs with teachers and principals.

“I look forward to serving the secondary teachers and administrators in Galveston,” says Neighbors. “Our community and schools were on the rise before the pandemic, and I hope we can regain that sense of momentum with strategic improvements and targeted support. GISD has a lot of strengths to build on!”

Neighbors has been in education for more than 25 years, the last 17 being within Galveston ISD. He has been a classroom teacher, instructional coach, lead teacher, campus AVID coordinator, assistant principal at Ball High, summer school principal, director of media and innovation & entrepreneurship at Ball High, and principal at Austin Middle School.

He will finish the year as the Austin Middle School principal before beginning his new role in the district support center.
