Storytime with Cadets: GISD Partners with Galveston Coast Guard Base

GALVESTON, Texas – Dec. 15, 2022 – Students at GISD’s Crenshaw Environmental Science Magnet School recently enjoyed storytime with a special group of visiting new friends – cadets from the U.S. Coast Guard Station Galveston.

Kindergarten through 4th-grade students excitedly rotated through the school’s library where small groups sat with cadets in uniform and enjoyed hearing them read aloud.

The gatherings were interactive – students listened attentively and also participated when prompted by the cadets to answer questions about the stories and to share their thoughts about the content.

The occasion gives rise to more than just a fun new learning opportunity for students. It’s also a beneficial and valuable new partnership for both organizations.

“The Coast Guard Partnership in Education Program is all about promoting excellence and strengthening our connection with our local communities,” Base Galveston Naval Engineer Lieutenant Matthew J. Romanuski said.

“Through volunteering at local schools like Crenshaw Elementary, we hope to heighten students’ awareness of traditional Coast Guard values, drug-free lifestyles, emphasis on learning, personal initiative, responsibility, and individual self-worth. Volunteering is also just downright fun. We love spending quality time and interacting with the students and their teachers!”

Those sentiments are shared by Crenshaw’s students and staff members, too.

“At Crenshaw, we are always looking for opportunities to expose our students to community heroes, as well as opening their eyes to the endless choices that they will have through a good education,” Crenshaw Principal Tracie Camp said.

“The Coast Guardsmen and women who spent time with our kids were not only giving generously of their time, but also modeling the importance of literacy and a strong work ethic. We hope that this singular interaction will develop into a long-lasting partnership for our students' benefit in the future.”

Both organizations hope to make these readings an annual event.
