Recap of 2018 ABC13 38th Annual "Share Your Holidays"

Recap of 2018 ABC13 38th Annual "Share Your Holidays"

Food Drive - Galveston/Ball High School

Date: 12 December 2018

Together  - with our outstanding Community Partners, Ball High School faculty and students, the team from First Lutheran Church who sponsored  the FeedGalveston initiative, our in-kind Community Partners and everyone in the community who took the time to "Share Your Holidays" so generously with those in need – we collected 27,000pounds ( and still counting!)  of nourishing, non-perishable food items, plus  received over $2,000 in monetary contributions – our best year EVER! Last year, we collected over 24,000 pounds – and that was 55% more than in 2016.

Yet, without our incredibly hard-working Community Partners, we would have never achieved these great results. Joining with Randalls, Classic AutoGroup Galveston, the Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Galveston Ministerial Alliance (and member congregations -Temple B'Nai Israel, Trinity Episcopal Church,  First Lutheran Church, and Moody Methodist Church), American National Insurance Company ( both the Galveston and South Shore offices), University of Texas Medical Branch ( both the Galveston and League City campuses), Moody Gardens, The City of Galveston, Galveston Police Department, Galveston Fire Department, Frost Bank, Hometown Bank, Moody Bank, Texas First Bank and the Galveston County Young Lawyers Association, were our NEW 2018 Community Partners: Galveston College, Port of Galveston, BHS Hospitality Club/Program,  and the Galveston Hotel & Lodging Association.  Also, to be acknowledged are our generous in-kind partners that donated food and beverage to the students and volunteers at BHS on December 7: Coffee (Starbucks- 61Street), beignets for breakfast (Gumbo Diner) and pizza for lunch (Mario's Seawall Italian & Pizzeria.)

In addition, many businesses donated their marquis to promote the event - Texas First Bank, Ideal Lumber Company, Galveston Insurance Associates (GIA), Henry Freudenburg Insurance, The Gumbo Diner, Mario's Seawall Italian & Pizzeria, Fish Tales, and Benno’s.

At the forefront of this year's Food Drive at BHS were our STUDENTS. The Media Arts students conducted radio interviews (broadcast on K-TOR Radio and underwritten by Blue Atlas Marketing – Nate and Lauren Stockard) and filmed the event on campus throughout the day December 7. Key Club members helped volunteer with the FeedGalveston project that took place in the BHS library - the same time as our "Share Your Holidays" collections were continuing in front of Ball High. National Honor Society students, BHS Cheerleaders, Band, Tornettes; Hispanic Dancers and the "Elites" from Parker Elementary School all played an integral part in the success of this year's 38th annual ABC13 "Share Your Holidays" Food Drive.  Also, this year, other GISD schools that helped make this year our most successful ever included Austin Middle School, Central Middle School and Morgan Elementary.

We're so grateful to everyone who helped us help those in need throughout Galveston County. It's also important to note, that all contributions to "Share Your Holidays" will be administered by the Galveston County Food Bank and distributed specifically to residents of Galveston County who are food insecure.
