Thompson & Co. Public Relations partners with Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce and
GISD’s Book Bus for back-to-school book drive

Following an Aug. 1 kickoff, the drive will continue through Aug. 22

 

GALVESTON, Texas – Thompson & Co. Public Relations is celebrating its 10th anniversary by coordinating projects to support the communities that have made this milestone possible. Originally founded in Alaska in 2009 and with employees in Los Angeles and New York City, T&C PR opened its Houston office in 2016. In support of its favorite island community, T&C PR is partnering with the Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce to launch a book drive benefitting the Galveston Independent School District’s new Book Bus initiative.

 

GISD’s Book Bus, which just debuted on July 8, serves as a mobile library that delivers books directly to students’ neighborhoods. The Book Bus needs a wide variety of reading materials to supports students from pre-Kindergarten through the 12th grade. The ultimate goal is to ensure all students are reading on or above grade level by the end of third grade.

 

T&C PR will kick off the book drive on Thursday, Aug. 1, from 2 – 3 p.m., when the Book Bus will be parked at the Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce, located at 2228 Mechanic Street. Each person who donates during this time will receive a raffle ticket for local prizes. Donors do not have to be present at 3 p.m. when winners are selected. The Chamber’s lobby will continue to serve as a collection point for donations from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., through Thursday, Aug. 22.

 

“Nothing is more important than education,” said GISD Chief Capital Management, Student Services and Communications Officer Dyann Polzin. “At GISD, we’re committed to ensuring all students have access to books. Reading and comprehension are essential tools for learning and getting students academically prepared for their futures.”

 

From Pirates Beach to Port Bolivar and everywhere in between, the Book Bus has been delivering books throughout the Galveston area five days a week this summer. In preparation for the new academic year, the Book Bus will alternate to its back-to-school schedule starting on Aug. 1. The GISD Book Bus operates through a collaboration with the Galveston ISD Education Foundation but relies on support from the community as well.

 

The Book Bus is currently in critical need of picture and chapter books of all genres and has a specific need for books in Spanish. To support GISD’s innovative approach to youth education, T&C PR is hosting a book drive with the support of the Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce.

 

“Community service has been an important part of T&C’s agency culture since its beginning. We know the new Book Bus is going to have a positive impact on students all across the island, and we are proud to be part of this important effort,” said T&C PR Vice President Houston Liz Baker.

 

“We’re excited to work with one of our newest chamber members to support our longtime community partners at GISD. From hosting our annual Lemonade Day to collaborating on the T&C Book Drive, we’re passionate about creating new and exciting ways for the community to come together and promote Galveston youth education,” said Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Gina Spagnola, IOM.
