Civil Rights Information

Galveston ISD takes part in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition programs. Complaints may be completed if you believe you have been subject to discrimination in any Nutritional program or activity provided by our District. All complaints are forwarded to the Texas Department of Agriculture. 

 

HANDLING DISCRIMINATION COMPLAINTS PROCEDURE:

Under United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulations, contracting entities (CE’s) must assure that school nutrition program (SNP) benefits are made available and provided to all eligible individuals without discrimination based on:

1. Race
2. Color
3. National Origin
4. Sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation)
5. Disability
6. Age
 

All SNP complaints alleging discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), disability, age and reprisal or retaliation for prior civil rights activity, verbal, written, or in person will be accepted by the Food and Nutrition Services staff and forwarded to TDA, or can be filed directly with TDA or USDA. No attempt to resolve the complaint will be made without first forwarding the complaint to TDA.

 

TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH USDA:

To file a program discrimination complaint, you may obtain a complaint form by sending an email to OAC@usda.gov. You or your authorized representative must sign the complaint form; you are not required to use the complaint form. You may also file a program discrimination complaint by writing a letter to the Center for Civil Rights Enforcement at the address that follows:

For information on the discrimination complaint process, contact the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, Information Research Service, at (202) 260-1026 or (866) 632-9992 (toll free). Individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have speech disabilities, may contact them through the Federal Relay Service at (800) 877-8339 or (800) 845-6136 (Spanish).

 

The United States Department of Agriculture(USDA) Nondiscrimination statements reads as follows:

In accordance with federal civil rights law and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) civil rights regulations and policies, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), disability, age, or reprisal or retaliation for prior civil rights activity. Program information may be made available in languages other than English. Persons with disabilities who require alternative means of communication to obtain program information (e.g., Braille, large print, audiotape, American Sign Language), should contact the responsible state or local agency that administers the program or USDA’s TARGET Center at (202) 720-2600 (voice and TTY) or contact USDA through the Federal Relay Service at (800) 877-8339. To file a program discrimination complaint, a Complainant should complete a Form AD-3027, USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form which can be obtained online at: https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/ad-3027.pdf, from any USDA office, by calling (866) 632-9992, or by writing a letter addressed to USDA. The letter must contain the complainant’s name, address, telephone number, and a written description of the alleged discriminatory action in sufficient detail to inform the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights (ASCR) about the nature and date of an alleged civil rights violation. TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH GALVESTON ISD-CHILD NUTRITION:

 

Please contact any employee at our Child Nutrition office located at 2606 40th St, Galveston, TX, 77553 or by phone at 409-766-5162. Cafeteria Managers at each campus are also allowed to assist you.

A complaint form must be filled out and signed. Any verbal or written complaint will be accepted, and form filling assistance will be provided. Click here to download the form.

Completed complaint forms will be forwarded directly to our Child Nutrition director for a review and then, they will be send to the local or state government agency in charge of handling the case.
