Effective substitute teachers ensure the educational process is not interrupted when the regular teacher or paraprofessional is absent, and provide students with appropriate learning activities as described in the classroom teacher's lesson plans.

Background Check
Candidates must have a clear background check, based on TEA-approved fingerprints, before moving to the next phase. Processing may be delayed if the applicant does not have electronic fingerprints on file with the DPS FACT Clearinghouse.

Processing Date / Orientation
Selected candidates receive new hire paperwork by email and an invitation to a substitute teacher orientation. Orientations are by invitation only, scheduled by Human Resources based on district needs, and are unpaid and mandatory. Human Capital Management or the Substitute Office may waive orientation for an experienced certified teacher or administrator requested to fill an immediate vacancy.

Assignment
Hired candidates begin accepting substitute assignments through contact from the HR Department.
